Senior Associate Attorney

Braun Blaising & Wynne, PC (BB&W) (https://www.braunlegal.com/) specializes in providing legal services on energy issues to public power entities. Since the formation of BB&W in 1996, our attorneys have represented clients on a wide array of matters, including market and regulatory advocacy, commercial negotiations, public agency law and environmental regulation. BB&W’s attorneys actively practice administrative law before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), California Energy Commission, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, California Independent System Operator and California Air Resources Board.

BB&W provides service to a diverse group of clients, which includes some of California’s most innovative and progressive public agencies. Included among the clients are trade associations (California Municipal Utilities Association, California Community Choice Association), large publicly owned utilities (Sacramento Municipal Utility District), numerous small publicly owned utilities, and a growing list of community choice aggregators (CCAs).

Position Summary and Responsibilities

BB&W seeks a full-time associate attorney with approximately 3-8 years of relevant experience (Associate). Typical duties will include representing clients in regulatory advocacy matters, drafting legal research and analysis, participating in administrative and evidentiary hearings and agency workshops, and conducting regulatory compliance activities. The Associate will be expected to work independently and assume full responsibility as the lead attorney for certain matters. The Associate will be required to attend hearings and meetings in various locations, including Sacramento and San Francisco.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Law degree from an American Bar Association-approved law school;
  • Admission to the California Bar;
  • Experience in regulatory or legislative affairs or in a closely related field at an electric utility, non-profit, or a government agency, with preference given for experience in regulatory proceedings at the CPUC;
  • Excellent legal writing and public speaking skills.

Work Location

BB&W’s office is located in downtown Sacramento. BB&W has a flexible remote work/work-from-home policy, but the position will require some level of work at BB&W’s Sacramento office, and preference may be given to candidates who are able to work primarily at BB&W’s Sacramento office.

Benefits and Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with other law firms who provide legal services to public agencies. Benefits include 4% BB&W match to employee contributions to a 401(k) plan, paid health insurance, paid time off, paid cell phone and paid parking in downtown Sacramento, and other general benefits.
